I was driving down the road and Megan (10) and Dakota (8) were in the van with me. I sang the Doxology as I drove along - and I added an elaborate "amen" to the end - which went on too long. Anyway, Dakota asked, "Dad, what are you doing?"
"Add-libbing. That's when you sing a song your own way and use the melody for the basis." To demonstrate, I sang "Jesus Loves Me" with a very strong add-lib.
Megan said, "It seems you would sing it that way only if you forgot how the song goes."
I said, "You don't sing it that way and expect everybody else to sing it the same way. You do it kind of like a solo. Dakota, you sing "Jesus Loves Me" the regular way and I'll sing with you add-lib style." We did and I have to say, it sounded pretty good."
